Local Museum Offers Tours and More for People with Low Vision

Rubin Museum of Art

The Rubin Museum of Art, located at 150 W. 17th Street between 6th & 7th Avenues in Manhattan, is offering free Verbal Description and Touch tours every 2nd Thursday of the month at 2 PM for visitors who are blind or partially sighted.

In the Verbal Description and Touch tours trained guides combine touch objects, such as sculpture, art materials, woodblocks, and ritual implements with the sounds and smells of the Himalayas, including bells, music and incense to create a unique sensory experience.

Tours are offered on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 2:00 pm. For the remainder of the year, they are:

  • September 13, 2012
  • October 11, 2012
  • November 8, 2012

Please schedule two weeks in advance by contacting the Group Visits Office by phone, 212.620.5000 x345, or by email, reservations@rmanyc.org.  Special individual tours may also be arranged.  Museum admission is waived for tour participants.

Rubin Museum representatives are available to visit organizations with touchable objects from the museum’s collection and to offer a brief presentation about these tours to staff or community members. There are other programs as well for  Visitors Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Senior Visitors, and Mindful Connections: Visitors With Dementia and Their Caregivers.  The museum is wheelchair accessible.
